When visiting Calgary I took in the Calgary Centre for Performing Arts located at 205 8^th Avenue SE.   Opened in 1985, this large complex houses four theatres and a concert hall, as well as having five rental boardrooms.    It’s in the heart of the city on Olympic Plaza; the center has staged events as diverse as K.D. Lang concerts and the High Performance Rodeo.

A quick trip to SW Calgary I found the Museum of the Regiments at 4520 Crowchild Trail.   It opened in 1990, the Museum of the Regiments is devoted to the history of the Canadian Armed Forces.  The largest of its kind in Western Canada, it focuses on four regiments and includes realistic displays that depict actual battle situations.   I found many cheap Calgary hotels available as it was peak traveling season where things change fast in the months of June – September when the weather is warmer.

I drove towards the BC border along the Crowsnest Pass which is located on Highway 3.    Like most Rocky Mountain passes, it is enclosed by snow-capped mountains.    In the early 1900’s this area was dominated by the coal mining industry and was the site of Canada’s worst mine disaster.  In 1903, a huge mass of rock slid off Turtle Mountain into the valley below, hitting part of the town of Frank, and scooping up rocks and trees, killing 70 people.  The Frank Slide Interpretive Centre offers an award-winning audio/visual presentation called “In the Mountain’s Shadow.”    A trail through the valley is marked with numbered stops and leads hikers to the debris left by the disaster.  Visitors can learn more about the history of local mining communities at the Bellevue Mine, which offers underground tours through the same narrow tunnels that working miners took daily between 1903 – 1961.

Heading north I drove to Edmonton and started my usual hunt for cheap Edmonton hotels to list on our site.     As far as I’m concerned the best part of Edmonton is downtown where you’ll find an awesome business district, fine restaurants and a night life like you would expect from such a young city.     The next day I took in the Alberta Legislature building which originally opened in 1912.   It was a warm sunny day downtown Edmonton so I decided to skip the West Edmonton Mall and spent the day touring Jasper Avenue.
